    Italian Spinach Rice Recipe

Some rice dishes need a long list of ingredients to taste special. This one does not.

This Italian spinach rice recipe builds its flavor from a few everyday ingredients: fresh spinach, garlic, broth, red pepper and good-quality rice. The spinach cooks down until its moisture disappears, allowing the garlic and seasonings to become more concentrated. Broth then gives the rice a deeper savory taste than plain water.

The result is soft, flavorful rice with a gentle sweetness from the red pepper and a fresh vegetable note from spinach. A little grated cheese over the top adds richness and makes the dish especially satisfying.

This recipe makes about five servings and takes approximately 20 minutes to prepare and 45 minutes to cook.

    Ingredients

    • 2 cups rice
    • ½ kilogram fresh spinach, cleaned and finely chopped
    • Salt, according to taste
    • 1 teaspoon crushed garlic
    • 2 cups broth or stock
    • ½ teaspoon ground red chili
    • Red bell pepper, sliced, according to preference
    • 4 tablespoons cooking oil
    • Grated cheese, for serving

Kitchen note: Rinse the rice several times until the water becomes clearer. Soaking it before cooking can also help the grains cook more evenly.

How to Make Italian Spinach Rice

    1. Prepare the rice and spinach

Wash the rice thoroughly and soak it according to the type of rice being used. Clean the spinach carefully, remove any tough stems and chop the leaves finely.

    2. Sauté the garlic

Heat the cooking oil in a wide pan over medium heat. Add the crushed garlic and cook briefly. Keep the heat moderate so the garlic becomes fragrant without turning dark or bitter.

    3. Cook down the spinach

Add the chopped spinach and cover the pan. Let it cook over medium heat until the spinach releases its moisture.

Continue cooking until most of the liquid has evaporated. This step matters because excess water can make the finished rice soggy.

    4. Add seasoning and rice

Season the spinach with salt and ground red chili. Stir well, then drain the soaked rice and add it to the pan.

Gently sauté the rice with the spinach mixture for a few minutes. This helps coat the grains with the seasoned oil and creates a fuller flavor.

    5. Add the broth

Pour in the broth and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Cook over medium heat until the liquid is almost absorbed.

Avoid stirring the rice repeatedly while it cooks. Too much agitation can make the grains sticky.

    6. Add the red pepper and finish

When the broth has nearly disappeared, arrange the sliced red bell pepper over the rice. Cover the pan and reduce the heat to low.

Let the rice steam until the grains are tender and the remaining liquid has been absorbed.

Rest the rice for a few minutes before serving. Finish with grated cheese if desired.

What Does Italian Spinach Rice Taste Like?

The flavor is savory but not heavy. Garlic gives the dish its aromatic base, while spinach contributes a mild earthy freshness. The broth adds depth, and red bell pepper brings a subtle sweetness and pleasant texture.

The final dish is softer and more comforting than a dry rice pilaf. Grated cheese creates a creamy, salty finish without requiring a heavy sauce.

For a stronger Italian-inspired character, a small amount of grated Parmesan can work particularly well. Freshly ground black pepper can also be added at the table.

    Italian Spinach Rice Nutrition

Nutrition depends on the type of rice, broth, cooking oil and cheese used. Based on the listed ingredients and divided into five portions, one serving provides roughly 330–380 calories before optional cheese, with approximately 50–55 grams of carbohydrates, 5–7 grams of protein and 12–15 grams of fat.

Spinach contributes folate, vitamin K, vitamin A and several minerals. Rice supplies carbohydrates, making the dish a useful source of energy. The nutritional profile changes considerably if extra oil or a generous amount of cheese is added.

For accurate dietary tracking, calculate the recipe using the exact brands and quantities used in the kitchen. The USDA FoodData Central database is a useful reference for checking individual ingredient nutrition.

    Serving Suggestions

Serve this spinach rice hot as a light main dish or alongside grilled chicken, roasted vegetables or a fresh salad.

A spoonful of plain yogurt can provide a cool contrast to the warm, savory rice. For a richer presentation, sprinkle freshly grated Parmesan over each serving just before bringing it to the table.

    Why This Recipe Works

The secret is simple: cook the spinach until its excess moisture disappears before adding the rice and broth.

That small step prevents watery rice and concentrates the vegetable flavor. Cooking the rice in broth instead of plain water also adds another layer of savory taste.

The method is straightforward enough for a weeknight meal but polished enough to serve at a family dinner.
